Our Open League sessions are all about getting the kids to simply play, get touches on the ball, and have fun! Players will be split into teams of 4 and will rotate through multiple short games (usually around 5 minutes in length), facing different opponents each time. The focus is on maximizing touches and encouraging lots of free play – the main goal is to ensure all players can enjoy themselves while improving their skills against a wide variety of opponents.
Please note that the exact game format will be 4v4 as a base but may change week-to-week to accommodate the number of players registered or in attendance. Teams will be formed at the field as players arrive, based upon gender, age/size and experience.
Sessions are run by our most talented senior youth players, who are beginning their coaching journey at the club. These game leaders are trained through Canada Soccer, and guided/supervised by our academy staff coaches. If you are interested in helping as a game leader, click here to visit our Careers & Coaching page.
The 6-week Fall Season of the Open League will also incorporate U7 and U8 players who are interested in bridging the gap between the summer and winter programs that are available to them. Players will be grouped accordingly (by gender, size and skill level) during sessions to ensure they are all adequately challenged and experience the right levels of success to enjoy the program!
Note that the Winter Season of the Open league will remain U9 and up, as advertised above. U7-U8 players can sign up for the Grassroots Skills Centre program for the winter months, which is the core Grassroots program for the winter season.

Players are required to wear protective shin guards and shoes at all sessions (can be bought at any sports store). Soccer cleats are allowed and recommended for all age groups, but not officially necessary.
Fall Season: As this is only a 6-week program spent outdoors in the fall, no uniform will be handed out or mandatory for the sessions. Players should dress for the weather.
Winter Season: The registration fee includes a white Ottawa TFC training shirt, black shorts and black socks. The uniform will be handed out during the first month of sessions - more details to be shared when confirmed. Players are required to wear this uniform at all indoor sessions.
Enthusiastic players who wish to have an additional training session each week can register for the optional Rec Tech program. These popular sessions take place directly before the Open League sessions at Orleans Dome in the winter, with our strongest youth coaches. For more details, visit the Rec Tech Training page here.
